Rental Assistance (Section 8) The housing voucher program, also known as Section 8, provides rental assistance to approximately 600 families throughout Boyd County. The goal of the program is to provide low-income families with decent, safe, and sanitary rental housing through rental assistance payments. Those desiring assistance are welcome to contact the Ashland Assisted Housing Authority regarding the submission of an application. The Authority has a preference ranking system that takes into account factors such as whether the applicant is working and whether the applicant is currently receiving housing assistance through another program. The preference system determines where an applicant is placed on the waiting list. There are times when the waiting list becomes lengthy and applications are not accepted. When applications are being accepted, they are only accepted at certain times of the day to allow staff time for other duties. It is recommended that someone call first to see if a staff member will be available to assist them when they visit the office. The Assisted Housing Authority usually has more families seeking help than it has available housing. For that reason, landlords interested in participating are strongly encouraged to inquire about the program. It offers benefits to the landlord such as a guaranteed payment of the assisted portion of the rent each month. The Ashland Assisted Housing Authority is located at 1436 Greenup Avenue, across from the Federal Building.
