The Ashland Park System provides many opportunities for recreational activities for the family.  The Park System consists of the following parks:  Central Park, Southside Park, Riverfront Park, Oliverio Park, Linear Park, Dawson Park and Municipal Pool, Spring Park, and ‘New’ Park.  The Public Services Department operates the Ashland Park System for the City Commission.  A Park Board and Tree Board, consisting of interested volunteers, advise the City on park operations.  Appointment to either board is by the Mayor with Commission confirmation.  All parks are open from 7:00 A.M. until 11:00 P.M. daily.

 The Park Maintenance Division of Public Services performs all maintenance activities in the system. The Maintenance Supervisor may be reached by calling 327-2042.  The normal hours of operation are 7:00 A.M. until 3:30 P.M. Monday through Friday with a maintenance worker on Saturday and Sunday to handle weekend activities or emergencies.

 The Recreation Division of Public Services handles scheduling for all park activities.  The Recreation Director’s office is located in the Round House on the 22nd Street end of Central Park.  The phone number is 327-2046.  The normal hours of operation are 8:30 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday.  A maintenance worker is on duty each day from 3:30 P.M. until 12:00 P.M. to patrol the parks and to handle any emergencies.The Round House Activity Room and the Log House may be rented for special events and weddings may be scheduled in the park.

 

Central Park:   Central Park is the largest park in the park system and is considered the ‘Crown Jewel’.  The park consists of forty-seven acres and was sold to the City of Ashland in 1900 by the Kentucky Iron Coal and Manufacturing Company for the sum of $32,500.  Until August 1923, the primary activity in the park was a horseracing track.

The park is located between 17th and 22nd Streets and Central and Lexington Avenues.

There are over 1100 trees in Central Park with each identified and located on maps of the park.  Following is a listing of some facilities available:

Dawson Park and Municipal Pool:   This park is located on Central Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets.  The park has playground equipment, a basketball court and a volleyball court. 

 

The pool is a modern pool with a water slide and a diving board. A fenced baby pool is also available.  There is playground equipment and a basketball court in the pool area.  A concession stand is operated when the pool is open.  Admission to the pool is $1.00 for school age and $2.00 for adults.  The pool operates from Memorial Day until Labor Day when school is not is session.  Season passes may be purchased for the pool and pool rental is available.  Call the recreation office for details.

 

Southside Park:  The park is located on Ballard Street on the property that was once Southside Pool.  It has a regulation softball field with state of the art lighting.  Restrooms are currently under construction and playground equipment is being installed.  A basketball court is planned for late this year or early next year.

 

Oliverio Park:   This park, once known as Clyffeside Park, is located between 39th and 41st Streets along Winchester Avenue.  The park has playground equipment, picnic shelters and restrooms.  Additionally, two little league fields are located on the front portion of the park beside the Ashland Water Plant.

 

Joseph P. Harris Park:  This is a new park located on the old railroad property that ran through the middle of town.  The park is long but not very wide and runs from 29th Street east to Winchester Avenue.  The park has a fountain, sidewalks and benches.

 

Spring Park:   This is a small undeveloped park alongside 29th Street near Newman.

 

‘New’ Park:  This is a new small park located on 47th Street at the riverfront.  The park has a basketball court and playground equipment is being installed.

 

Riverfront Park:  Located on the riverfront at 15th Street this park has the Ashland Boat Ramp.  It also has an outdoor stage where Summer Motion concerts are held each 4th of July week.  These concerts draw crowds of over 30,000.  The annual fireworks are also held at Riverfront, which is the largest fireworks display in this area of the country.
